The Other Side
2019–2022 · Piano / performer · Intermedia performance

About the work
The Other Side is an evolving intermedia performance directed by Kei Fushiki, bringing together bodies, spoken text, moving image, sound, lighting and spatial installation. Ryo Yamada joined the project as pianist across its successive versions from 2019 to 2022, and was also credited as a performer in the 2021 Kyoto presentation.
Rather than functioning as a separate concert layer, the piano was embedded within the changing relationships between performers, image, sound and space. Each version of the work was rebuilt in response to its venue and moment, moving between present action and individual or collective memory.
The project premiered in 2019 at Aichi Arts Center as part of the Aichi Triennale Performing Arts Open Call, and was subsequently developed through an online live performance at the former Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts, a Tokyo presentation, Kyoto Art Center’s KAC Selection, and the Sound Performance Platform at Aichi Arts Center.
