Ogen/blik

About the work

Created by Ryo Yamada and filmmaker Tatsuya Maruyama for Ogen/blik Vol.3, this new work for piano and moving image premiered on 30 June 2019 at Ryogoku Monten Hall in Tokyo. The concert brought contemporary music, electronics and visual media into a shared performance setting.

In a pre-performance interview, Maruyama described an interest in the relationship between projected image, sound and the stage itself. Discussing this collaboration, he connected Yamada’s minimal sound-making with the atmosphere of an almost silent night scene, drawing on his own research into night forests.

Live piano sits at the centre of this audiovisual encounter. The collaboration forms part of Yamada’s continuing practice of responding to image and space through composition and performance.
