About the work
East from the West (The concept of Love) was developed for the 2025 DUO’s members exhibition at De Haagse Kunstkring in The Hague by Liza Lin, Diana Harteveld and Ryo Yamada. Bringing together Chinese calligraphy, ceramics and porcelain, and music, the project asks how ideas of love may change through migration and globalization.
Yamada transformed recordings of porcelain breaking, fragments being swept and dry porcelain clay reacting with water into a six-minute sound composition. In the exhibition, the music installation was activated by visitors’ movement, connecting material sound with the surrounding visual works.
For the exhibition’s later performance programme, a short film documenting the collaboration was combined with Yamada’s live improvisation on grand piano. The work moved from an installation encountered in space to a shared moment of image and acoustic improvisation.
